Myriam Bourens and Antoni Barrientos have published two papers on the biogenesis of human mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase. The papers, published in EMBO Reports and the Journal of Biological Chemistry, characterize the function of two cytochrome c oxidase assembly factors, CMC1 and COX18, respectively.

Antoni Barrientos, Ph.D., professor of neurology, has received a highly prestigious Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA), or R35 award, from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), part of the National Institutes of Health. We used yeast and fly models of polyglutamine diseases to study how enhancement of mitochondrial function affords suppression of polyglutamine-induced cytotoxicity in the context of stress and aging.
Dasmanthie De Silva graduated in December 2015 and Ya-Ting Tu in March 2016. They are now following postdoctoral training at Berkley and Stanford, respectively.
Our labs are moving next week (9/25/15) to fully renovated space in the Neurology Research building (NRB) in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In the campus map, our current building is marked with a blue cross and the new building with a red cros. Our official new address will be soon available.

A review on “Mitochondrial Ribosome Assembly in Health and Disease” by Dasmanthie De Silva, Flavia Fontanesi, Ya-Ting Tu, Alexey Amunts and Antoni Barrientos was published in Cell Cycle. A review on “Caloric restriction, Mitochondrial Function and Aging” was published in BBA-Bioenergetics.
